Puerto Vallarta has remained in the top position for a variety of reasons, the number of passengers, the amount of ships docking yearly, and the amount of customer requests for Puerto Vallarta on the itinerary.
One of the reasons Puerto Vallarta is so successful in the cruise industry is the professional efforts of the Puerto Vallarta's Integral Port Administration (API) to position Vallarta. Director of the local port authority, API, Francisco Martínez Narváez says it will be necessary to increase from two berths to up to six berths. As well as upcoming major changes planned for the Maritime Terminal, current plans include information monitors and better traffic flow for passengers.
One of the future possibilities is to make Puerto Vallarta a "home port" for selected cruise ships. With trips originating and terminating here, passengers have the opportunity of extending their cruise with overnight stays in Puerto Vallarta before or after their voyage.
On average the amount spent per cruise passenger in Puerto Vallarta is $58.75 USD. Each ship averages 2500 passengers and as many as three cruise ships in one day dock in Puerto Vallarta in the high season.
