The Art Season Begins

October 26th is the date slated for the beginning of Puerto Vallarta's famous art season, and with it, the ninth annual Art Walk. The system that supports the Visual Arts in Vallarta, conformed in first instance by creators, art houses and the indispensable presence of a collectors market, has come progressively evolving throughout the 55 years of its history.

There has been a long road and a considerable evolution from the humble beginnings of arts in Vallarta to the current thriving Arts scene. Today, there are more than thirty established art galleries in Puerto Vallarta and the dynamic art market involves the active participation of more than five hundred artists.

The demand for works of high quality art continues to grow annually creating healthy competition among artists and competition among galleries grows apace. In this sense, T. Fuller, Córsica, and Omar Alonso have set out to attract collectors of major works of art, armed with catalogues with some of the best exponents of the Mexican scene as well as artists with an international reputation. For the 2005-2006 season, the number of galleries participating in Art Walk has grown from last season's twelve to this year's seventeen galleries including: Arte Latinoamericano, Córsica, Omar Alonso, Des Artistes, UNO, Corona, Nelly, Portus, Leonardo, Ocho, and more, Pacifico, Narváez, Gallery de Ollas, Vallarta, Art Popular Mexicano, Sergio Bustamante, and La Nana.

As you probably know, Art Walk is not a guided tour. The idea is to encourage regular visitors, art collectors, or just passersby, to take the opportunity to spend a little time each Wednesday late afternoon, at each of the participating galleries, and to enjoy the tremendous quality and variety of their exhibits. As most galleries are located in the Downtown area, the actual walking part of Art Walk doesn't take that long to visit each gallery. During the opening of many of the exhibits, one can often meet the some of the featured artists, and in the most of the cases, share a toast of honor free of charge.

Galería Arte Latinoamericano is preparing a double celebration for October 26th: their 7th anniversary, and the opening of the new season with a collective exhibition from its impressive catalogue: Marta Gilbert, Marenal, José Guerrero, Yolanda Marroquín. For their part, Galleria UNO will be showing the works of Melvinita Hooper, and Galería Corona will be showing the new suggestive and seductive works of Alfonso Sosa. Omar Alonso and Gallery des Artistes have teamed up to prepare an exhibition around the theme of landscapes including the much admired works of Flor Garduño, Rodrigo Moya and Luis González Palma as well as a contemporary pictorial exhibit of the works of Feliciano Béjar, Miguel Castro Leñero and Alfonso Peña, and many more.

A more detailed directory of information including addresses, telephone numbers, and the schedules of the various galleries, has been prepared for you and can be found here.
