The fourth annual Terry Fox Run, organized by the Terry Fox Committee, will take place on May 22 in Puerto Vallarta. This year the Terry Fox Run celebrates its 25th anniversary raising funds for the fight against cancer.
Participants may walk, run, cycle, or wheelchair themselves along the course 10KM (starting at Splash), 4KM (starting at the Military Zone), or 1KM course (staring at Westin Regina), finishing at Collage in Marina Vallarta. At Collage there will be entertainment, food, refreshments, and activities organized by the Terry Fox committee. Three thousand five hundred participants are expected. Money raised comes from donations raised by participants.
Last year $1,400,000 pesos were raised and donated to the Cancer and Immunology Research Group of the University of Guadalajara.
In 1980, three years after loosing his leg to cancer at age 18, Terry Fox decided to run across Canada, with the hopes of collecting one dollar from each inhabitant of the country. The funds raised from the feat would be donated to cancer research and finding a cure. After 143 days and 3,339 miles, Terry was forced to stop outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario due to lung cancer. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981. He was 22 years old. At the time of his death Terry had raised $24 million dollars, equivalent to one dollar from every person living in Canada at that time.
Terry's legacy lives on with the Terry Fox Run that is organized annually in Canada and fifty other countries, including Mexico. Last years race achieved a third place rating in terms of funds raised, helping to put Mexico as one of the top ten countries in terms of fund raising in the Terry Fox Run!
