Theater? In Vallarta? ... Two months of theatrical offerings of all types, open such a vast and historical range of possibilities making theater lovers feel like kids in a candy store.
My attention was riveted by a scene of the Diary of Anne Frank; chilling images of the holocaust. The journey begins ...
This adaptation, includes a beginning, an end, a structure, even humor. There is clarity in the story: a German-Jewish family leaves their home, fleeing the Second World War, and are cloistered in an attic for days ... months ... years ... all are captured by the teenager girl's best friend: her diary.
The Franks-mom, dad, and children, share their shelter with another couple and their son. Survival seems easy, but the conflicts increase except between the adolescents: Peter and Anne; food is scarce.
Their accommodation is adequate though basic, but one soon forgets the external factors such as being discovered, the terrifying SS guards, the stench of death and destruction hidden in the streets. A woman shares little bits of news from the outside world with them, but they are often forgotten.
Although the performances are not brilliant and the volume and diction could have been better, the viewer, if patient enough to see it through, will witness great moments, something that few works achieve. The staging should improve.
The role of Israel Ortiz is significant: adaptation-director-producer-actor-set designer, but this presents a weakness too. His talent and passion are evident however for his next project, he should avoid what he has done here; perhaps not easy task: teamwork.
This infinite expedition could offer pleasant surprises in the not too distant future, to the satisfaction of the community, and hopefully this group of players does not falter in their acting and continue to play great roles. This work is well worth the fifty pesos for admission and supporting theater is important too.
