This weekend (February 13th, 14th and 15th), the Malecon will be closed to vehicular traffic.
This is a trial run to see if closing the Malecon to vehicular traffic will be successful.

Starting tonight at 6:00 PM until Monday, February 16th at 5:00 AM, there will be no vehicles allowed on the Malecon from the street 31 de Octobre to the seahorse statue. (see map). Vehicles traveling to the south side of Vallarta will be able to take the parallel street, Morelos, to south of the Rio Cuale.

El MaleconTransito (traffic control division of law enforcement in Vallarta) is not allowing any parking on this street to control traffic congestion, thus opening up the street to two lanes of traffic. While roughly 160 or so parking places will be lost in the downtown core, over 1000 other places are available for this trial run.
Extra parking is available at Ley grocery store, Rizo’s, Comercial Mexicana-Mega, as well as 80 spaces at the City Hall.

On a press conference, the mayor Gustavo Gonzalez Villaseñor, remarked that “making the Malecon into a pedestrian zone will give back the tourists and residents the pleasure of enjoying this beautiful town located between sea and mountains.”
