Making the Difference

Rebeca studied Public Accounting at the University Arkos. She is proud to have been born in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, and admires the friendly manner that characterizes locals in this village-like atmosphere and of course its warm beaches. "I miss very much the Vallarta of the past and its people."

In September 2006 the Visually Impaired Association of Puerto Vallarta was founded. In January 2008, Rebeca was entrusted with the position of president. This non-profit association was created to meet the needs of people with blindness, and was formed by a group of 28 people: children and adults, regardless of economic status, with the simple goal of interacting and sharing experiences they have in society as visually impaired people.

Its main activities, at no cost to its members, are teaching the Braille system, talking computers, adapted sports and musical groups, which are currently releasing an album and also enjoyment in various social events.

Rebecca believes that awareness is still needed among society, with so few accessible ramps on sidewalks and the preferred seating decals on municipal buses not followed by passengers, and the sites reserved for the handicapped are not being respected.

"One of the most important issues for the visually impaired in Puerto Vallarta is that we not only prepare for it, but also companies and organizations the opportunity to give us jobs because we do what anyone who sees, although many people still do not believe it.

"Rebecca loves to travel to the state of Michoacán that seems to be a beautiful and a great culture with colonial architecture. The nicest thing that has happened in my life is attending the birth of a friend's baby who became her godson.

Among her favorite musical genres are the ballads, especially the song Aurora by Eros Ramazoti. He speaks of the constant effort to turn personal dreams into reality.
"The Alchemist" and "The Monk who sold his Ferrari" by Paulo Coelho, are her bedside books.
