As part of Encuentro de Culturas ( the Cultural Encounter) organized by our Department of Art and Culture to showcase the various artistic expressions of the Mestizo culture in Puerto Vallarta, artist Máximo Alfonso will appear at the Cuale Cultural Center on July 26 at 8:30 pm, the event’s final night. This closing performance will highlight Mesoamerica, following Saturday presentations that showcase disciplines from Africa and the Middle East.

On Saturday, July 12, a performance full of fire, dance, and drum music showcased Africa with The Anye Foli Kedance company, which has worked in Puerto Vallarta for three years and also offers dance classes in several schools in Guadalajara along with native African teachers.

On Saturday, July 19, the stage was handed over to the Middle East when a group of children and adults from Shanti Studio presented their Arabic, Hindu, and Egyptian dances. Meanwhile, the Maria José dance studio presented flamenco and Spanish dances.

Composer Alfonso is not just a great performer of Mexican ethnic music but also fabricates many of the instruments he uses to interpret his melodies, such as bamboo and ceramic flutes. One of his main goals is to preserve Zapoteca, Tepehuana, and Náuatl music. His songs are accompanied by the voice of María Canderalia Pérez and the violin of Don Vicente Bautista, who is well known for his popular Mexican music.

On the same day, Huichol group Los López, composed of three native-born musicians, will interpret regional music with guitar, bass, and violin. And Latin-American group Folkra will perform under the direction of Néstor Villaseñor. Both appearing at the Cultural Center.

The objective of this initiative by the municipal government is to open a free venue where local artists can showcase their talents as well as teach us the great ancient music and dance from various regions of the world that have come together in our city. They plan to continue showcasing other cultures thoughout August, and to do it in an open-air venue just as soon as the rains stop threatening. The artists involved are independent and decided to volunteer without any other type of compensation. Admission is free, but space is limited, so we recommend you arrive early.
