If you remember the restaurant Prego at Plaza Las Glorias, which disappeared after Hurricane Kenna was in town, they are back in action, but not where you expect.
Hidden in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood, right across from the market on Lazaro Cardenas and Camichin is the new Prego. While nothing special to look at, the food is not only wonderful but inexpensive. A beautiful mixed salad with plenty of veggies and garlic bread is 19 pesos. A larger-than-personal-sized pizza starts at 35 pesos. They also serve up a seafood spaghetti or tender filet mignon for fewer than 80 pesos.
Ernesto's Good Grub near the Cinema Versalles (on Fco. Villa) on Rafeal Osuna is still serving their legendary All You Can Eat Ribs on Thrusdays for 95 pesos. Exceptional sauce, nice smoky flavor, complete with mashed potatoes and vegetables. Staff is wonderful, as are the hunting dogs on the roof and a coatimundi who wanders around freely. (They had an ocelot, but he's living in Mismaloya at the Zoo that should open some… year?) Great place to bring friends, and they don't try to hustle you out the door. If Ernesto and the boys went hunting, ask about the wild duck tamales. They also serve up some of the best tortilla soup anywhere.
Excellent fish, calamari and shrimp tacos are to be found at Marisma on Naranjo and Carranza in Emiliano Zapata. The stand is in the middle of the street near the small tunnel and has been there for years dishing up fish and seafood to the many that flock here. Only open during the day, and always clean and busy. The deep fried fish tacos are 10 pesos and whole fried shrimp are only12 pesos each. Be sure to try all of their delightful sauces.
If you get here too late, after 5:30 PM, head over to the corner to El Brujo and experience their arrachera, specialty shrimp dishes or spinach stuffed chicken breasts. Most meals are under 100 pesos, and expect to wait in line to get in from 7:00 PM to 10:00PM high season.
Señor Sweeny's changed their hours for the summer and now offers their 10 pesos burgers from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Great burgers, great price, and the rest of the menu is fantastic as well, including their BLT torta for 25 pesos. Daniela's stuffed fish is heavenly, and they have real honest to goodness hand cut French Fries. (Or is that Freedom Fries?)
Last but not least, the deal of the century right now is mangos. Mangos, mangos, mangos.
They are everywhere and we haven't hit peak season yet. Buy 'em on the beach, stores, or jump up and grab one off a tree if you can reach. Be sure to watch your head in some areas and where you park your car. By the peak of the season you can get a kilo of mangos for 3 or 4 pesos. Under 20 cents USD a pound!
Tip of the day: If you haven't eaten a whole ripe mango, it's best to do so in the shower.
