Last night Mexican ranchera legend Alejandro Fernandez serenaded what appeared to be the entire population of Puerto Vallarta in a free concert celebrating the 87th anniversary of Puerto Vallarta as a municipality and 37th as a city. At least 50,000 people turned out for the show on the Malecón. Alejandro, dressed in full charro regalia, was accompanied by four back up singers and a full mariachi band. He sang songs spanning his thirteen year career, including his latest album Corazón Abierto and also songs by Juan Gabriel (who performed here in November 2004), and his father, Vincente Fernandez (who delighted audiences in February).
Hundreds of spectators paid up to $1,000 pesos for seats in restaurants with privileged views of the stage at Tequilas, Viejo Vallarta, No Name Café, and El Jardin de Pulpo. Two video screens with speakers were set up along the Malecón to give people a better view of the action on stage. Boats also moored in the bay to watch the show.
Near the end of the spectacular, which lasted over two hours, Alejandro Fernandez was presented with the keys to the city of Puerto Vallarta and invited by Mayor Gustavo González Villaseñor to be the ambassador to Puerto Vallarta. El Portrillo enthusiastically said "Si" and will be a vital part of the promotion of our city in the following year.
After the concert a thundering fireworks display capped off the memorable evening. |
